Recently, Zhao Yongpo, general manager of Great Wall Motor’s (GWM) Haval brand, released an official image of the new Haval H7 SUV (not to be confused with the Haval H7 for the overseas market, which is the Haval Second-Generation Big Dog in the Chinese market). The new car was declared by the Chinese MIIT in October 2024 and may be a modified model of Haval Xiaolong Max due to Zhao’s comment that a “big upgrade” version of the new Haval Xiaolong Max will be launched in 2025.

The length, width, and height of the new Haval H7 are 4780/1895/1725 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2810 mm. The interior adopts a five-seat layout. In comparison, the Haval Xiaolong Max currently on sale is positioned as a medium-sized SUV, with a length, width, and height of 4758/1895/1725 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2800 mm. For reference, the price range of the Haval Xiaolong Max is 159,800 – 179,800 yuan (21,800 – 24,600 USD).

In terms of power, the new Haval H7 adopts GWM’s Hi4 technology and is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine (model GW4B15H) and an electric motor. The engine has a maximum power of 85 kW (114 hp). Its 27.54 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack provides a CLTC pure electric range of 126 km. For comparison, the Haval Xiaolong Max also uses the GW4B15H model 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, matched with a 19.27 kWh battery pack, providing a WLTC pure electric range of 83 km under WLTC conditions.

The Haval H7 was first launched in April 2016, positioned as a hardcore off-road vehicle for market attention at the time. Within the first year of its launch, the Haval H7 sold nearly 50,000 units in less than eight months in 2016. However, the Haval H7’s sales started to fall sharply due to the rise of GWM’s Wey brand, and the car eventually withdrew from the market in 2021. For example, in 2017, the Haval H7’s annual sales dropped to 38,000 units. Fast forward to today, the renewal of the Haval H7 implies a refinement in the product strategy and market positioning.
