Tesla recalls all its 1.6 million cars in China, but it’s just OTA update
The government regulator announced today Tesla has to recall 1,617,643 vehicles, including imported Model S and Model X and domestically produced Model 3 and Model Y.
The affected cars have production dates between August 26, 2014, and December 20, 2023, and include nearly all cars Tesla has ever sold in China. China’s State Administration for Market Regulation issued two reasons for the recall:
The first reason for the recall affects 7,538 cars, including imported Model S and Model X. According to the regulator, there is a problem with the door unlock logic. If the crash happens, the non-collision side door latch may detach from the latch, leaving the door unlocked and posing a safety hazard.
Tesla will use the over-the-air (OTA) software update to prevent the door latch and latch from disengaging during a vehicle collision. Owners can complete the software upgrade without going to the store.
The second reason for the recall affects 1,610,105 cars, including domestically produced Model Y and Model 3, imported Model 3, Model S, and Model X. According to the regulator, when the automatic assisted steering function is turned on, the driver may misuse the level 2 combined driving assistance function, increasing the risk of a vehicle collision and posing safety risks.
OTA can also fix this problem without the need to visit the store. For vehicles that can’t do OTA, Tesla will contact the owners and proceed with the software update free of charge in the store.
