Recently, the new Haval H5 SUV was spied on Chinese streets. Previously, it has a code name known as “P04”. As a replacement model, although the new car is still named Haval H5, it is different from the previous H5 version in terms of appearance, style, and model positioning.

Haval H5 was a compact SUV under the Haval brand and was launched in September 2010. Since Haval H5 was built on Great Wall Motors‘ pickup platform, its appearance is more inclined toward off-road features. However, its sales performance was unsatisfactory. For example, in 2014, H5’s annual sales volume was only 61,875 units while H6’s annual sales volume was 217,889 units. Later, the Haval H5 Classic Edition was launched on August 4, 2017. Then in 2018, the Haval H5 car series was discontinued. After nearly 5 years, Haval H5 is re-branded as Haval’s first large SUV.

Based on the size and positioning of the new Haval H5 – 5190/1905/1835mm with a 3140mm wheelbase, it may become the largest SUV under the Haval brand. Earlier declaration on the Chinese MIIT showed that the car has three different labels at the rear: “Haval H5”, “Haval H5L”, and “Haval H5 MAX”. These three labels may correspond to compact, medium, and large versions of the Haval H5. It is unsure which naming convention the car will adopt.

Additionally, the car has a 2+3 five-seater layout.

In terms of power, the new Haval H5 is equipped with a model 4C20B 2.0T gasoline engine and a model 4D20M 2.0T diesel engine, mated to a 6-speed manual. The engines are provided by SVOLT, a spin-off of Great Wall Motors. The 2.0T gasoline engine offers two power options of 145 kW and 165 kW. The maximum power of the 2.0T diesel engine is 122 kW.

Coming to the interior, the previous spy photos showed that it is equipped with an LCD instrument panel and a central control screen for infotainment. The air-conditioning control area may be a touch screen. The overall design is pretty traditional, not super stunning.
