The new MG4 EV hatchback officially breaks cover in China after its core specs were exposed by the domestic regulator. The SAIC-made model will become the MG’s first global car for 2025. It is confirmed that it will replace the ongoing MG4 Electric, which suffered from slow sales in China.
MG is an ex-British automaker that was acquired by the Chinese state-owned car company SAIC in 2005. Its vehicles aren’t really popular in China. However, MG sells well in overseas markets. On March 20, the ex-British brand announced that the new MG4 EV will become its first global model for 2025.
MG4 EV officially revealed in China
The MG4 EV in official images is finished in a light purple color. It adopts white-colored pillars and a roofline. The front end of the MG4 EV integrates LED headlights and a sporty bumper with a trapeze-shaped air intake. Sculpted fenders visually expand the MG4 EV. The charging port sits in the left front fender of the car.

In contrast with today’s trend of using flush door handles, the MG4 EV adopts traditional doorknobs. This design element adds practicality to the new hatchback. However, it increases the drag coefficient. Another styling feature of the MG4 EV is 17-inch five-spoke rims. They also increase the air drag of the model. So, the new MG4 EV’s designers prioritized practicality and exterior styling over energy efficiency.

From the back, the MG4 EV has a roof spoiler with an integrated braking light. The car also has a rear wiper, and two arrow-shaped taillights joined by an LED strip. The new MG4 EV has a minimalistic rear bumper. We can also notice this model adopts an independent suspension in the rear axle.

The new MG4 EV seemingly differs from its predecessor. As mentioned, the sales volume of the “old” MG4 EV is low in China due to fierce competition in the local electric vehicle market. In February 2025, only 13 units of the MG4 were sold in China. The new model will become its replacement to take on the BYD Dolphin, Wuling Bingo, Aion UT, and Geely Xingyuan.
New MG4 EV specs
The new MG4 EV is a hatchback with dimensions of 4395/1842/1551 mm and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. For clarity, it is 108 mm longer than its predecessor. This vehicle adopts a single TZ180XS1001 electric motor with a peak output of 120 kW (161 hp). The “old” MG4 EV had a 125 kW (168 hp) e-motor as standard. Moreover, there was the Xpower 4WD model with up to 315 kW (422 hp). So, the new model stepped back in terms of power output.

The new MG4 EV has a top speed of 160 km/h. It has a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from Rept Battero Energy. The capacity hasn’t been disclosed yet. The car’s curb weight is 1,485 kg. More on the MG4 EV as we get it.
CarNewsChina expects the new MG4 EV to launch in China in April, possibly at the Shanghai Auto Show, and arrive in Europe in Q4 2025.
