Vehicle brand export volume ranking from China: BYD, Chery, and MG are the top three, February 2025

In February, China exported 441,000 vehicles, a month-on-month decrease of 12.6% and a year-on-year increase of 60.5%, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). By category, 131,000 units were new energy vehicles (NEVs), a decrease of 12.6% month-on-month and an increase of 60.5% year-on-year; and 310,000 units were gasoline-powered vehicles, a decrease of 3.2% month-on-month and an increase of 4.9% year-on-year.

In particular, the BYD brand exported 66,652 vehicles, surpassing the Chery brand, claiming the top vehicle brand exporter title. Let’s take a closer look at the rest of the brand export volume ranking below. Note that the brands here refer to the individual brand and not the automaker group.

The BYD and Chery brands continued to lead the list, with 66,652 and 64,176 units exported, respectively. At the company level, the Chery group exported 86,000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 9%; and the BYD group exported 71,000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of more than 200%.

The new Tesla Model Y in China

On the contrary, Tesla China, which has been ranked among the top three in export volume numerously, has suffered a steep decline this year. Its exports in February were less than 4,000 vehicles, a year-on-year plunge of 87% and a month-on-month drop of 86.8%. From January to February, Tesla China’s cumulative exports were 33,000 vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 46.8%. In addition, Tesla China is also under pressure in the domestic market, with a wholesale volume of only 30,688 vehicles in February, a year-on-year drop of 49% and a month-on-month drop of 51%, at a two-year low.

By models, BYD’s Song Plus had the highest export volume in February, with a total of 22,103 units exported, continuing a streak from January in which 26,028 units were exported. Chery’s Tiggo 5X took the second place, replacing the Tesla Model 3 from January. At the same time, the MG ZS maintained its third place, with 12,036 units exported in February, down from 15,150 units in January. Other models such as the Chery Discovery 06, Jetour X70, Geely Binyue, and Haval Jolion still maintained their spots in the top 20 from January.
