Ssangyong is back in China with the rather good looking new Korando SUV. It will however, not be a very great success. Biggest problem: the Korando comes with a turbo diesel engine while passenger cars with diesel engines are forbidden in most Chinese cities, including in Beijing and Shanghai.

It is therefore very hard to see why Ssangyong is doing this, there is no patrol engine available. Maybe Ssangyong wants to sell in the countryside alone but most car buyers there prefer their cars cheap as chips, and cheap the Korando is not. It is imported from South Korea, price starts at 179.800 yuan and ends at a steep 259.800 yuan. That buys two big SUV’s from Geely/Chery/BYD and others. Hopeless is seems indeed. The engine for those who still care is a 2.0 turbo diesel with 129kw and 360nm.
